Ferryhill Town Council recently held an Art and Photography Exhibition, running for two weeks from Monday 24th July until early August. The event allows local artists and photographers, both experienced and amateur to showcase their work.
Due to the huge success of last years Art and Photography exhibition, Ferryhill Town Council held this event both in person, in Ferryhill Town Hall, and virtually online, on our Facebook page.
The exhibits entered were extremely varied and the event was once again a huge success. Visitors of the Exhibition were asked to vote for their favourite pieces of work. The winners of the 2023 Art & Photography Exhibition are as follows:

Children’s Art Winner – Amelie Turner for ‘Wild Card’
Photography Winner – Karen Tomkinson for ‘Bleabeck Force Upper Teesdale’

Ferryhill Town Council is pleased to announce that the latest group to receive funding through its Members Initiative Fund scheme is Ferryhill Stage Society, who recently attended a presentation at Ferryhill Town Hall where Councillor Joe Makepeace presented representatives with a cheque for £350.
Established in 1938 the Ferryhill Stage Society have been entertaining audiences for over 80 years. Funding provided through the Members Initiative Fund will be used by the Society to cover costs associated with putting on a production of the popular musical ‘Legally Blonde.’
Councillor Makepeace said ‘I am delighted to be able to support such a worthwhile group. Ferryhill Stage Society have been thrilling audiences for decades, and it is a pleasure to be able to contribute towards their latest production.’

Ferryhill Town Council would like to say a big thank you to everyone who attended and supported this year’s Summer Gala. The event proved hugely popular, with residents and visitors alike turning out in large numbers to enjoy the attractions on offer. The Town Council would like to say a special thank you to all stall holders, Turners Show Rides, Stanley Events, Salus Medical, children’s entertainer Mr Windbags, face painter Dawn Belshaw, and of course to everyone who came along to join in the fun of the fayre.
Mayor, Councillor Curtis Bihari said “It was great to see such a fantastic turn out at this year’s Summer Gala. The event, which has been running for 23 years has grown in popularity, and I am over the moon to have held a stall at the event, which managed to raise £210 in aid of my chosen charities for the year, Teenage Cancer Trust and Ferryhill Residents Associations”.

In a recent cheque presentation held at Ferryhill Town Hall, Councillor Peter Atkinson presented a cheque for £100 from his Members Initiative Fund (MIF) to Geoff Wilson, on behalf of the White Horse FC.
The Football Club, who are based at the White Horse Pub, and who play their matches at the Dean Bank A167 pitch, will use the monies together with a £350 contribution by Councillor Atkinson from his County Councillor Small Grants Fund, to help cover the annual running costs incurred by the Club.
Councillor Atkinson said ‘I am delighted to be able to support Ferryhill White Horse FC. MIF monies will enable the grassroots Club to cover their fees for 2023-2024 without having to worry about how they are going to raise the funds.’

Following a thorough recruitment process, Ferryhill Town Council have been delighted to appoint Mrs Leeanne Owens to the post of Town Clerk. Leeanne joins us from Durham County Council where she has worked for 19 years and has also spent 2 years as Clerk to Esh Parish Council.
Mother of 2, Leeanne from Stanley, Co Durham was delighted with the appointment, she said “I am delighted that I have been offered the role of Town Clerk and look forward to my new challenge. I am very passionate and look forward to working towards the Town Council’s priorities.”
Cllr Liam Fellows, Chair of the Human Resource Committee said: “I am delighted that council agreed to ratify the HR Committee’s unanimous decision to offer Leeanne the role of Town Clerk. Leeanne is extremely passionate and enthusiastic in taking on her new role and I am certain will be an asset to both the Town Council and the wider community of Ferryhill.”
Cllr Curtis Bihari, Mayor of Ferryhill said: “It is fantastic to welcome Leeanne to Ferryhill Town Council. It’s an exciting time for our council as we head into this new municipal year with a new Town Clerk and a new Mayor. I am looking forward to working with Leeanne and pushing our town forward with fresh energy and renewed enthusiasm.”
Mrs Owens is eager to get to know Ferryhill as quickly as possible and will be looking to meet with local groups and organisations in the coming months.

Ferryhill Town Council would like to invite residents and visitors to Ferryhill’s Annual Summer Gala, which will be taking place on Saturday 29th & Sunday 30th July 2023. Show Rides will be operating in the Market Place Car Park from 11.00am – 6.00pm on both days. On Sunday, 30th July, road closures will be in operation to accommodate a range of attractions taking place between 11.00am – 5.00pm including a variety of Market Stalls, Catering Vehicles, Face Painting by Glittery Girl, and children’s entertainment by
Mr Windbags who will be hosting magic shows at 12.30pm and 2.30pm in the Town Hall garden and will also be demonstrating his balloon modelling skills throughout the day.
Free parking will be available during the event in the Car Park at the rear of Mel’s Travel, and temporary bus stops will be in operation for the duration of the road closures.

Funding will be used to enable the Football Club, who are based at the White Horse Pub and who play their matches at the Dean Bank A167 pitch, to purchase new training tops and equipment.
Councillor Lamb said ‘I am delighted to be able to support Ferryhill Rangers FC. MIF monies will enable the Club to purchase much needed training tops that will give the players a sense of identity, and also help purchase new equipment for use during matches and training sessions.’

In a recent cheque presentation held at Ferryhill Town Hall, Councillors Stephen Bowron and Curtis Bihari presented a cheque for £325 from their Members Initiative Fund (MIF) allocations to representatives from the Ferryhill Miners Banner Committee.
The Banner Committee comprise a group of volunteers and descendants of Miners who fund raise throughout the year, to finance events taking place around the Annual Durham Miners Gala weekend. The Committee will use the funding secured through the MIF to cover costs associated with transporting the Dean & Chapter and Mainsforth Colliery Banners to Durham for the Miners Gala, and also for costs associated with Ferryhill Town Band, who lead Ferryhill’s Banner Procession through Durham City to the Miner’s Gala main event, which this year will be taking place on Saturday, 8th July.
Councillors Bowron and Bihari said ‘We are delighted to be able to support the Ferryhill Banner Committee. The group work tirelessly to fundraise for events that celebrate the mining heritage of the area, and we are only too pleased to support them.’
