Mainsforth Sports Complex is situated on the eastern edge of Ferryhill on the site of the former Mainsforth Colliery. Ferryhill Town Council secured ownership of the site in 2001 but has been responsible for its maintenance since as far back as 1974.
The Complex comprises of a Cricket Pavilion with outfield, which can be hired for private functions, and was newly built in 2015 thanks to a cocktail of external grant funding being secured, a Bowls Pavilion with Bowling Green, Football Facilities, public toilets, floral displays, newly installed children’s play equipment, and a path to adjoining woodland and fishing pond for use by members of the Ferryhill Angling Club. Members of the public and the various groups, who use Mainsforth Sports Complex including Durham Bowls Association, Durham County Cricket Under 18’s and local football club’s Ferryhill Dynamo’s FC and Ferryhill Town FC continue to praise the facilities available at the Complex, which has won various awards over the years including an environmental award for the Cricket Pavilion’s modular design, Northumbria in Bloom Awards, and for retaining its prestigious Green Flag Status each year since 2008.
