Ferryhill Summer Gala will take place on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th of August 2022. Show rides and family amusements will operate on both days within the Market Place Car Park from 11.00am until 6.00pm on both days.

On Sunday 7th of August there will be a road closure in operation in order to accommodate a number of attractions and family entertainment that will be taking place between 11.00am and 4.30pm

Market stalls will be placed along Market Street selling crafts.  Anyone wishing to hire a stall please contact Ferryhill Town Council at the Town Hall on 01740 652157 by no later than 21^st July.

Free parking will be available on both days during the event in the car park at the rear of Mel’s Travel (former Nat West Bank)

Temporary bus stops will be on operation on Sunday 7th until 7.00pm with notification of their location on the original stands as well as the Market Place notice board.

Ferryhill Town Council is pleased to announce that three local community groups have become the latest beneficiaries of the Council’s newly launched Members Initiative Fund.

Endeavour Woodcrafts CIC received a donation of £225 from Councillor Carole Atkinson for an Arts & Crafts project, while the Ferryhill Banner Group received £450 from Councillor Liam Fellows to help cover costs associated with hosting the Ferryhill Miners Banner Parades, and Local drama group, Chance Drama received a total of £600 comprising £450 from Councillor Christine Woods and £150 from Councillor Joe Quinn, to help with the costs of hosting a production of ‘Goldilocks.’

All four Councillors were delighted to be able to support projects being delivered by Ferryhill based community groups. Mayor, Councillor Carole Atkinson said ‘The new Members Initiative Fund is proving to be a huge success.  Since its launch in April, the initiative has already donated funds to seven local community groups. It is fantastic to be able to provide financial support in this way, helping groups deliver local projects that benefit the Town.’

Mayor of Ferryhill, Councillor Carole Atkinson visited Ernest & Rita Shaw yesterday, to present them with a bouquet of flowers & whisky tumbler on behalf of Ferryhill Town Council, as they celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary.

Councillor Carole Atkinson, Mayor of Ferryhill, proudly raised the NHS flag at the Town Hall this morning (5th July) to celebrate the 74th birthday of the NHS and to say thank you for the amazing work of all NHS staff.

Mayor of Ferryhill, Councillor Carole Atkinson visited Ferryhill School on Friday to deliver medals to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Following a motion put forward by Councillor Dave Farry to a recent Council meeting, it was agreed by all members that Ferryhill Town Council provide each school child in Ferryhill with a jubilee themed gift to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, this motion was agreed by members and it was decided later that the most suitable gift would be a medal that could be kept for years to come.

The medals will be delivered to local primary schools this week when each child will be given a medal in a presentation box to keep as a gift from Ferryhill Town Council.

Mayor of Ferryhill, Councillor Carole Atkinson, said “this was a fantastic idea put forward to Council and all members agreed that the children should have something to keep to mark this memorable occasion.  I was extremely happy to visit one of the Ferryhill Schools last week and met with some of the young people to show them the medals”

To mark Armed Forces Day, Ferryhill Town Council organised a special service in the Town Hall garden, which took place on Saturday, 25^th June.

Mayor, Councillor Carole Atkinson gave a speech, and the Armed Forces Day Flag was raised by Ex N.C.O. Andy Denholm, 15^th/19^th The Kings Royal Hussars to the sound of the bugle played by Ex Bugle Major Garry Suggett.

The flag was flown in unison with other flags being raised across the United Kingdom, Channel Islands and Isle of Man in a universal show of support, honouring Britain’s Armed Forces past, present and future.

Residents, Councillors and Paul Howell MP attended the service and were delighted to be joined by Robert Grey, Ferryhill Station Royal British Legion Standard Bearer, who served 12 years in the British Army, serving in Northern Ireland, Cyprus, Tidworth on NATO, Warminster, Germany and England.

Town Mayor, Councillor Carole Atkinson said ‘It was an honour to take part in Ferryhill’s Armed Forces Day Service, it is very important to demonstrate support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces, and work so tirelessly to defend the UK and its interests.’

Having been cancelled for two years due to the Covid Pandemic, the news that Durham Miners Gala will once again be returning on Saturday, 9^th July 2022 has been very much welcomed throughout the region.  For Ferryhill Miners Banner Committee this means that they can once again prepare for the much loved Annual Miners Banner Parades through the Town, which Ferryhill Town Council are delighted to help facilitate.

On Friday 8^th July 2022 at 7.00pm the Dean & Chapter Banner, led by Ferryhill Town Band will be paraded from the Aged Miners Homes at Dean Bank to Ferryhill Market Place.

On Saturday 9th July at 8.00am it will be the turn of the Mainsforth Colliery Banner, again led by Ferryhill Town Band, to be paraded from the Surtees Arms Public House along to the Eldon Arms Public House.

Road closures will be in force for the duration of the parades, using stewards from Stanley Events, local police (subject to availability) and Ferryhill Town Council staff.

Following the Saturday morning parade at Ferryhill Station, the Miners Banners will be transported to Durham City for the Annual Miner’s Gala event.  A bus has been arranged to pick up outside the Eldon Arms from 8.30am.  The cost of the bus will be £2.50 per person.  Anyone wanting a seat on the bus should contact Peter Atkinson on telephone: 07900702330.

Having launched its Members Initiative Fund in April 2022, Ferryhill Town Council is pleased to announce that it has already been able to support five local groups through the scheme. The latest group to receive funding is Ferryhill Stage Society, who recently attended a presentation at Ferryhill Town Hall where Councillors Joe Makepeace and Gordon Barker, who each donated £450 to the Society, presented representatives with a cheque for £900.

Established in 1938 the Ferryhill Stage Society have been entertaining audiences for over 80 years.  Funding provided through the Members Initiative Fund will be used by the Society to cover costs associated with putting on a production of the popular musical ‘9 TO 5.’

Councillor Makepeace and Councillor Barker said ‘we are delighted to be able to support such a worthwhile group. Ferryhill Stage Society have been thrilling audiences for decades, and it is a pleasure to be able to contribute towards their latest production, which we can’t wait to see.’

Elsie McGowan, Ferryhill Stage Society said ‘On behalf of Ferryhill Stage Society​ I ​would like to say a huge thank you to Councillors Makepeace and Barker for their generous donation from the Members Initiative ​Fund. Staging a show is a very costly business; however, this donation will help us greatly in our production of 9 to 5 The Musical. It is very much appreciated’.

This year Ferryhill’s Annual Senior Citizen’s Trip will take place on Thursday 28th July 2022. The destination for this year’s trip will be Whitby.  This was the preferred destination indicated by questionnaires completed by those attending the trip in 2021.

Ferryhill Town Council would like to say a huge thank you to local Company Supportive, who have kindly contributed £1,200 to the cost of this year’s coaches, which has enabled the Town Council to offer the trip completely FREE of charge to residents of the Town aged 65 years and over.

Ferryhill residents over 65 years wanting to attend the trip are invited to pick up free early bird tickets from Ferryhill Town Hall from Monday 20^th June 2022.  Tickets will then be made available to the wider community from Monday 4^th July 2022 onwards subject to availability and at a cost of £5 for adults and £3 for children aged 13 years and under.

Coaches will meet in Ferryhill Market Place from 9.00am and will leave for Whitby at 9.30am. Tickets must be shown prior to boarding the buses.

Coaches will leave Whitby for the return journey to Ferryhill at 5.00pm and will drop off at various points on the main bus route around Ferryhill.

Town Mayor, Councillor Carole Atkinson said ‘It’s a privilege to be able to work in partnership with Supportive. The Town Council is extremely grateful for their support, and thoroughly look forward to working with the organisation again on future initiatives.’

Chair of Ferryhill Town Council’s Events Committee, Councillor Joe Quinn said ‘As the Chair of the Events Committee I would like to say a big thank you to Supportive for their kind donation, which has made it possible for the Town Council to offer Senior Citizens from Ferryhill the opportunity to attend this year’s Trip FREE of charge.’

Tracy Hutchinson of Supportive said “Our aim at Supportive has been the same for 28 years, ‘Helping people to achieve a better quality of life’.  Supporting the older people of Ferryhill to get out and have fun after so many restrictions is a very good use of our Barclays 100×100 funds.”
