Duncombe Cemetery

Originally managed by the Ferryhill & Chilton Joint Burial Board, Duncombe Cemetery was originally opened in 1887, with Ferryhill Town Council taking over its management in 1988.

Duncombe Cemetery offers the only burial facility available in Ferryhill and has seen over 11,000 burials take place since it first opened.

The Cemetery has benefitted from significant

investment over the years. Since taking over the Cemetery, Ferryhill Town Council has secured in excess of £120,000 grant funding to ensure the continued improvement of facilities.

Improvements have included the development of Memorial and Ashes Gardens, a new Car Park with a footpath link to the neighbouring Carrs Nature Reserve, which is a site of special scientific interest (SSSI), and more recently the development of a new, inclusive, stone built public toilet facility with baby changing facilities, as well as the installation of a ‘Letters to Loved Ones’ Post Box offering residents a safe spac

e to express their feelings, whether writing to deceased loved ones, conveying unsaid words, or sharing cherished memories.

The former Chapel located in the grounds of Duncombe Cemetery has also benefitted from improvements, and now offers a florist service, enabling visitors to the Cemetery to purchase fresh flowers on-site, to lay at loved one’s graves, R & P Flower House can be contacted on facebook.

Anyone interested in purchasing a plaque of remembrance, at Duncombe Memorial Garden, is invited to contact the Town Hall to make arrangements. Plaques are available at a cost of £240 plus VAT which includes inscription. Please download an application form to apply.

A single plot can be purchased in the Ashes Garden for caskets of ashes. Once buried in the ashes garden, a granite plaque can then be purchased from a local Stonemason to mark the plot where the ashes are buried. Plaques must sit on top of the plot and be flat to the ground. Prices for the ashes garden can be found in the latest burial fees for 2026-27.

If you would like to trace the grave of someone interred at Duncombe Cemetery please see the Index Books 1904 – present.  Alternatively, if you would like to find out full details of a burial at the Cemetery, Ferryhill Town Council officers will be able to assist, and can undertake a burial search at a cost of £8.00 plus tax per search, alternatively if you would prefer to visit the Town Hall and view the full set of burial books, this can be arranged free of charge.
