Mayor visits Ferryhill Couple Celebrating Diamond Wedding
Jim and Ann Mitton (nee Harrison) of Dean Road received a visit from Mayor of Ferryhill, Councillor Curtis Bihari on Thursday 15th October 2026 as they celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary. The Mayor delivered a bouquet of flowers for Ann and a Whisky tumbler for Jim.
Jim, 83, was born in Ferryhill Station and left school at 15 to start work at RW Toothill Furnishing in Newton Aycliffe for ten years. Jim’s next career move was 33 years at Black and Decker in Spennymoor until he retired in 2001. Ann, 81, was born in Dean Bank and worked at the ‘60 Minute Cleaners’ in the village for around five years before finding employment in The Clothing Factory in Dean Bank. She later became a receptionist at Chilton Surgery for around 17 years. The couple met in the village when they were teenagers and have one daughter, Nicole and a granddaughter, Annabelle.
After marriage, Jim and Ann lived in Parker Terrace for five years before settling down at their current address in Dean Road, where they have lived for the past 55 years.
They enjoy going to the theatre and cinema and love visiting historic places. They also enjoy going out for meals and spending time with their family. Ann was a keen knitter and crocheter and was a dress maker in the past, whereas Jim enjoyed gardening.
Mayor, Councillor Curtis Bihari, said “It was lovely to celebrate the 60th wedding anniversary of Mr and Mrs Mitton.
We had a great chat about how our families had crossed paths over the years in Ferryhill. With Jim and my Granda, both working at Black & Decker and Ann being friends with nana when they both lived up Dean Bank.”
The couple celebrated their special day with family and also have plans to visit Grantley Hall in North Yorkshire, somewhere they enjoy going for special occasions.
