Ferryhill Town Council to Hold Beacon Lighting Ceremony to Mark VE Day 80
On Thursday 8th May 2025 the nation will come together to remember the millions that paid the ultimate sacrifice, fighting and securing the freedom we all enjoy today.
From early morning when the sun rises to evening as night descends, church bells will ring out, special flags will be flown, town criers will proclaim the victory, the haunting sound of bagpipes will fill the air and, in a final gesture of homage, beacons and Lamp Lights of Peace will be lit to signify the light that emerged from the darkness of war.
Ferryhill Town Council will be joining hundreds of others in remembering the brave men and women who took part, not only from our Country, but also the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories, in a National Beacon Lighting Ceremony to mark the 80th Anniversary of VE Day. Residents are invited to congregate from 9.10pm on Thursday, 8th May in Ferryhill Town Hall Garden for the special Ceremony. The Programme for the event will be as follows:

9.10pm – Participants to Congregate in the Town Hall Garden, Ferryhill
9.18pm – Welcome by the Mayor of Ferryhill
9.20pm – Blessing and prayers by Interim Change Minister, Lindsay Southern, St Luke’s Church
9.25pm – Speech by The Mayor of Ferryhill, Including the reading of the Proclamation & Tribute
9.30pm – Raising of the Official VE-Day 80 Flag by Ex N.C.O. Andy Denholm, 15th/19th The Kings Royal Hussars To the sound of ‘When the Battle’s Over’ played by Piper, Adam Jenkins
9.30pm – Official Lighting of the Beacon by The Mayor of Ferryhill
REFRESHMENTS TO BE SERVED INSIDE FERRYHILL TOWN HALL AFTER THE BEACON HAS BEEN LIT
Residents and Businesses are also encouraged to decorate their properties with VE Day 80 Bunting, in a fitting tribute to mark this momentous occasion.
