Ferryhill Marks 100th Anniversary of Town’s War Memorial
Ferryhill Town Council would like to say a big thank you to everyone who attended the service held to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the unveiling of the Town’s War Memorial, on Saturday, 1st February in Ferryhill Town Hall Garden. A special thank you to Reverend Christopher Humble from the Methodist Church for officiating at the service, Andrew Potts for playing Last Post and Reveille, to the Royal British Legion standard Bearers who came from across County Durham to mark the occasion, to Clare Metcalfe and Andy Denholm for their support in making the arrangements, and to the many residents who braved the bitter cold weather to attend the ceremony, including Alan Strickland MP.
Originally unveiled by Brigadier General H.C. Surtees on 31st January 1925, the War Memorial comprises a statue of a Durham Light Infantry Soldier resting on his rifle, standing on a plinth inscribed with the names of the soldiers commemorated.
Mayor, Councillor Carole Atkinson, who initiated proceedings at the Ceremony said ‘It was an honour to take part in the 100th Anniversary service of Ferryhill’s War Memorial. The Memorial is an important part of the Town’s history, which acknowledges the great sacrifice made by Ferryhill’s war heroes. We Will Remember Them.’
